BlackBerry Q5 Goes Official
We talked about the BlackBerry Messenger news a little while ago, but that’s just scraping the surface of what’s happened today. BlackBerry Live is underway, and the festivities are serving as the point of origin for a host of other BlackBerry announcements. Let’s take a look at some of the bigger stories to emerge, concerning both new hardware and new software.
First up is the announcement of the BlackBerry Q5. This is the phone we’d been following as the R10, but it gets a proper name as it goes official. Frankly, the new moniker makes a large deal of sense, as the Q5 is clearly a scaled-down version of the higher-end Q10. As such, it should get a budget price, but BlackBerry is still keeping quiet about just how affordable the Q5 will really be.
It will be available in red, white, and black in select global markets, starting this July.
On the software side, we get word that the Z10 will finally be seeing the distribution of BBOS 10.1. The Q10 was the first BB10 handset to ship with the updated build, and now early adopters will be able to get it, as well.
Then there’s news of a major update to BlackBerry’s Android Player. The software lets developers package their Android apps for use on BlackBerry 10, but so far it’s been living in the past, only supporting Android 2.3. This new update will bring the Player up to Android 4.2.2, seriously helping with compatibility.
