LG Plans On Launching Smartphone With Flexible Display In Q4 2013

LG announced, during its financial results call, that they plan to launch a smartphone with a flexible OLED display during the fourth quarter of 2013.
While they did not give any details on the device itself, everyone knows that creating an entirely flexible device would be close to impossible, considering the way current smartphone technology stands at the moment. However, as we saw with a recent Samsung prototype, it is possible that LG is thinking of extending the display beyond the edges of the device and allowing for flexibility in that way.

Speaking of Samsung, it has been reported that they are working on an even more advanced flexible smartphone of their own, however, they have not given us any insight as to when such a device might hit the market.
This announcement from LG meshes perfectly with a previous announcement from LG’s Head of Mobile Marketing, Won Kim, during which he stated that “something different and something unique” will be on its way to consumers later this year. Although, the device Kim spoke of was slated to launch in Q3 of 2013.

LG has really been moving and shaking this year as they have also announced the arrival of ‘curved’ OLED TV screens later this year as well.
As companies are leaning toward flexible and curved displays, we may be seeing the birth of a new trend in action. Either way, they have to figure out the logistics of such a change and we are very interested to see what LG has come up with!
